With over 700 employees, Nijmegen Supply and Innovation Center develops products for the Greater China Market and produces for Greater China, European, Asian and Latin American markets for self and contract manufacturing supply. Mead Johnson R&D Europe is integrated in the Nijmegen facility. For this team we are searching a Senior Product Development Scientist who will lead and deliver product development projects from product concept, formulation design, lab prototype, pilot and plant trial to product launch to market.

Your new role

Responsibilities and Duties
  • Responsible for delivering Product Development Formulations.
  • Supporting and driving future innovations and comes up with new ideas in food science and processing technologies
  • Prepare and review technical documents necessary for each phase of product development.
  • Responsible for executing plant trials and first commercial productions of innovation projects in Nijmegen plant
  • Responsible for analytical work associated with product development.
  • Contributes to and assists in the qualification of new ingredients, processes, and packaging components.
  • Participates in multiple development projects of moderate to high complexity simultaneously
  • Designs and proposes product specifications that contribute to the overall product development strategy
  • Builds and maintains networking relationships with external partners & internal resources to acquire other technical knowledge and experiences.
  • Supervises other PD scientists and support them in their daily job and project deliveries.

Expected areas of competence and activities
  • Applied knowledge of ingredient functionality, interactions, and other fundamental food science principles.
  • Understanding of milk powder manufacturing process and spray drying technologies.
  • Applied knowledge of manufacturing scale-up or modification and the relationship of various operations to overall product functionality.
  • Applies understanding of core food science principles and food processing technologies and Food Safety and GMP’s in product and process design and execution.
  • Experience in organizing and executing plant trials in a manufacturing environment with proven success starting up new products in key process technologies.
  • Effective communication in technical topics to various audiences to influence decisions.
  • Effective utilization of networking relationships internally and externally
  • Troubleshooting in case of product and process deviations in a reliable way
  • Experience in project responsibility and project participation in technical or cross functional project teams
  • Experience in executing, participating, and evaluating sensorial and stability tests
  • Experience in handling multiple projects at one time

What you'll need to succeed
  • Minimum 5-10 years R&D experience of experience in food/pharmaceutical/dairy manufacturing industry in R&D, QA or production function with experience in product development, particularly in product formulations.
  • BSc or MSc degree in Food Technology/Food Science, Food Engineer, Chemical engineering, or any other Food Science related Science degree.
  • Knowledge of food science principles and product development principles
  • Knowledge of dairy unit operations
  • Experience in infant formula design is an advantage
  • Fluency in English, written and verbal. Dutch is a plus.
  • Can work with people and in teams in different levels and function of the organization across different cultures
  • Attention to accuracy and detail with good analytical, organizational skills and follow through.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, take responsibility with good sense of self-motivation and perfection.
  • Keen to have a broad cross functional experience rather than a corporate career.
