Role summary:

A Smart Energy Metering Systems Engineer in a customer-facing role working in a customer project delivery environment, having core experience in conceptualization, solution design, testing and implementation of Smart Energy applications, meter data management and head-end systems, energy and/or water metering devices, using public and private networking and telecommunication solutions. Hands-on working experience is mandatory for this position.

Main responsibilities:

  • Analysis of customer solution requirements and technical implementation:
  • Discuss, review and analyse customer requirements / specifications, together with project team for solution development, closely aligned with defined products.
  • Add software elements to the existing software according to the solution that must be developed
  • Perform technical design, to define detailed data semantics, structure, access, and communication standards, considering the applied hardware and required functionality and performance requirements
  • Understand and able to create testing process, test case design, test planning and reporting
  • Select and describe the algorithms for data processing, define how the product must be implemented
  • Define detailed tasks for third-party contractors and suppliers, when required
  • Analyse complex systems and perform root cause analysis for technical issues, to support their resolution

Customer solution development & delivery:

  • Integrate the functional specifications into the existing product line and into the technical design
  • Define and describe the parameterization and the elements needed to implement the parameterization (both hardware and software)
  • Program, configure and implement the developed solution as per objective specifications and follow international industry codes & standards.
  • Test the solution considering the interaction with other elements, for own products as well as for customer-specific situations. Testing can be via remote environment or at customer’s location based on project requirements.
  • Coordinate & track (by scheduling, testing and quality review) specific development activities performed by third parties
  • Create customer/solution specific documentation for training and other operational tasks
  • Support the provisioning of customer/third-party training services
  • Provide customer technical support during and after solution Go Live
  • Assist with the data migration activities and initial system load/performance testing activities
  • Apply detailed knowledge of new/modified products to give feedback on performance, functional operation (for example, by demonstration) and assist with technical queries and creation of product marketing materials
  • Generate, review and maintain product specifications and product functional specifications
  • Represent the ‘Voice of the Customer’ at design and development reviews (internal and external with third-party partners)
  • Provide initial training for sales and customer personnel on products and solutions
  • Support sales managers in customer presentations and responding to customer’s technical questions
  • Provide technical support for product tests, proof of concept and setup of pilot installations, to enable customer orders

Other tasks:

Geographic Scope & Travel Requirements:

  • Based in Rosmalen, Netherlands
  • Some travel to locations in Netherlands and Belgium, as and when required
  • Some travel to global locations, as and when required

Required Education:

  • Degree in Information Technology / Computer Science / Software Engineering / Electronic Engineering, or equivalent

Required Experience:

  • Sound knowledge and hands-on experience working with and testing:
  • Smart Energy applications and systems, electricity, gas and water metering solutions and end devices (meters / dataloggers)
  • Communication networks, protocols and stacks, for example: WAN, CAN, HAN, GSM, CSD, GPRS, LTE, IP, TCP, UDP, I2C, UART
  • Web Services: CIM codes, SAP Integration for meter applications (MDUS)
  • Basic knowledge of SQL/Java Script/Linux and Microsoft Windows operating environments
  • Basic understanding of software logic and database queries

Preferred Experience:

  • Energy and/or water industry operating standards and codes
  • Metering protocols, for example: DLMS, G3, MBUS, Zigbee
  • Programming skills, for example: Java, C, C++, VB
  • Software architecture patterns
  • Software project tools: Atlassian suite (Jira, Confluence), Bitbucket
  • Candidates having experience with Honeywell Smart Energy products and applications shall be preferred

Required Technical Skills:

  • Competent use of standard Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Visio, etc.)
  • Creation and maintenance of technical documentation such as requirement specifications, design documents, test plans, test reports, user manuals, training material
  • Structured and methodical approach to problem solving investigations and testing
  • Ability to identify add-on solutions to customers’ processes
  • Practical, hands-on approach
  • Good communication skills – interpersonal and technical
  • Awareness of commercial aspects of software delivery projects
